Joshua Mazza Humanitarian Bursary

“Does it take a disaster before we give money to poor countries and people in need?” This was young Joshua Mazza’s question to his father as he wrote a cheque in support of the tsunami relief fund. When most boys his age would be concerned with sports, music or cars, Joshua had a genuine concern and a keen sensitivity for the plight of the less fortunate on our planet.

Engaged, thoughtful, enthusiastic and sincere, Joshua Mazza was a student and athlete at Michael Power/St. Joseph High School. Although his tenure was brief, he had a lasting impact on his peers and his teachers.

Joshua Mazza, died in a tragic skiing accident in March of 2006.

In memory of Joshua’s generous spirit and in honour of his ideals his family has established three distinct awards:

• Camp White Pine Leadership Award
• Joshua Mazza Humanities Award ( to a graduating student)
• Joshua Mazza Humanitarian Bursary

We invite Michael Power/St. Joseph students who are considering participating in humanitarian efforts to apply for the Joshua Mazza Humanitarian Bursary.

Garfield Weston Awards

We have extended the deadline until 15 April because we have received fewer applications for the Garfield Weston Awards than expected. We are concerned that excellent candidates for the awards are missing out on a wonderful opportunity. We need your help to identify and encourage students bound for college programs to apply for the award.

By encouraging a student to apply, you could be helping them obtain the opportunity of a lifetime. The award comprises an $8,000 annual stipend, a tuition waiver from the college, $3,500 in summer funding and includes a mentorship program and participation in an annual leadership conference.

As you know, we are looking for students who are passionate about their field of study; curious, courageous, and willing to try new things; and community-minded and truly interested in becoming involved and making a difference in society. Students must be bound for full-time community college or CEGEP studies starting in September 2010.
The application form may be downloaded from our web site.

Directory of Black Scholarships and Awards
The Scholarship and Bursary Guide was originally compiled by the Association for the Advancement of Blacks in Health Sciences and by the Association of Black Employees of Hydro. The guide provided a listing of awards given for exceptional achievement.
Recognizing and encouraging our youths’ abilities and supporting their need is one of the responsibilities of all communities. It is for this reason that Community Unity Alliance is continuing this tradition by providing this edition of this guide. It is the hope of the CUA that this will provide a base for the educational advancement of many students in our communities.
